Description: Very rare Remington Elliot .44 Army Revolver
Serial number 5*** dating to 1862
The Elliot is described as the rarest of all the Army revolvers, as it was soon modified.
This pistol has the cylinder bolt which pulls open with the ramrod in the closed position. It was soon discovered to be a fault in it's day as when the pistol was drawn from a holster and then cocked, the cylinder would fall out! An oversight by the Remington factory. It was almost instantly modified to combat the problem.
This pistol is still in the original format and has not been updated, making it very rare!
In very good overall condition, with its correct high spur hammer.
Grips have seen better days, with notches cut to the lower part. I am not sure if this is part of an exciting history or someone watching too many cowboy films!! But this gun would have gone through almost the whole of the American civil war and the Indian wars and even may have gone west after that, so who knows?
Matching numbers except trigger guard
Correct early chamber
Frontsight may be a replacement?
Good bore and a crisp action.
A real "must have" for any serious Remington or Civil war collector.
